Celebrate Lollipop Day with a Mānuka Honey Twist
July brings some major celebrations, and one of our faves would have to be National Lollipop Day! While most people reach for conventional pops, this year, we invite you to discover something extraordinary: Taylor Pass Honey Co. Mānuka Honey Pops. They're the perfect blend of sweet tradition and soothing, on-the-go goodness.
A little Lollipop History
Did you know that the lollipop concept may be traced back to prehistoric times? Cave paintings from thousands of years ago show honey gatherers climbing ropes to harvest the sweet nectar. After all that effort, and so as not to waste a precious drop, they likely licked the stick they used to gather honey from the wild hives, creating the first-ever lollipops. Talk about a moment that changed the world! This natural beginning then evolved. Archaeologists believe that the great ancient civilizations all produced fruit and nut confections that they "candied" in honey, which serves as a preservative, and inserted sticks to make it easier to eat, proving that honey and sticks have been the perfect pair for millennia.
Sweet Innovation
The modern lollipop as we know it today, however, has its roots in American innovation. In 1908, George Smith of Connecticut began making hard candies mounted on sticks and called them "Lolly Pops" after a local racehorse. Smith's Bradley Smith Company initially produced these treats by hand, but as demand grew, they developed machines to automate production. Meanwhile, the Racine Confectionery Machine Company in Wisconsin was revolutionizing the industry with automated machinery that could produce thousands of lollipops per hour. Smith eventually trademarked the name "lollipop" in 1931, cementing America's role in creating the mass-produced treat we celebrate today.
